Weird Al!!

I would like you all to know that about a year ago I was sitting calmly at my desk at work while listening to one person talk to another person about Wierd Al. The conversation started innocently enough - they were talking about how funny "eat it" was or something. But slowly one of the guys started opening up about his Wierd Al fandom... and it was huge. He obviously owned many of his records. He started to talk about the payback that came with close listening. He talked about what talented musicians Wierd Al and his bandmates were, and the level of creativity required to make something so entertaining.

I am not kidding! This conversation went on for almost 30 minutes! A conversation about how Wierd Al is a great artist! It was quite a thing to hear. So you all stop making fun.

i dig wierd al for many reasons, not the least of which was his version of usher's "confessions pt. II"...guy can throw down with the best of them. for a white guy, he did a sick job all that vocal gymnastic shit that usher pulls off. i mean i know he's a joke (by his own design) but the talent is there.

I was writing for a community newspaper about ten years ago and did an interview with Weird Al for a preview of an upcoming concert. He was actually a thoroughly OK guy -- funny without being goofy about it, smart, knew plenty about music, genunely personable. While I'm not the biggest fan of his music, I don't mind most of it; his jokes are funny most of the time, and I think his music carries the MAD magazine message that mainstream pop culture is not to be taken too seriously, not a bad thing to tell the kids. I also dug "Don't Download This Song" and that he posted "You're Pitiful" on line for free because James Blunt was OK with the song but his record label wouldn't give permission for its release.
