i do this from time to time and have found using a LD tube condensor with a old hand held crystal mic can work great for a very close intimate sound, recorded on separate tracks. i do get the capsules as close as possible, though the mics track very differently. in the past with a certain voice, i did need to use a de-esser and a little compression. i cannot believe the amount of tonal variations i could get from experimenting with channel volumes and ratio to each other. those crystal mics are really useful for the mumbling type...
