hi hat cymbals for recording

11
I have a collection of a ton of old small novelty type cymbals, from old old spun Zildjians to cheap pressed off-brands. I often mix and match to find different hihat solutions... quieter, softer, brash, high or low toned, etc. Also I have found when I use a top that is a different size than the bottom it often softens the blow.... like a 10" with a 12".

i used to have a set of 12" hats. they were terrible in a loud live situation really thin and tinny, but recorded beautifully. they were small enough to not overpower, but still had a big enough sound recorded. i sold them years ago and regretted it. so i recently bought a couple of 12" wuhan splashes ($12 each at shitar center!) to recreate the glory. they are not quite as crisp, but have a lower pitch and trashier sound, which helps.
i breathe spears.
