That is how the song on the record is. Don't know which record or track name, but I remember noticing it once. Then I saw them play a show and the audience imitated it. It wasn't as bad as you'd think, especially since the audience just started doing it. But why I am here defending it, I have no idea.
What I wanted to write about was my wife's idea for Clap Camp. We were at some show at Schuba's and the opening band had a keyboard player who's role was to lead a clap for the audience. So he would clap a simple 1, 2, 3, 4, but the dipshit couldn't stay in time. The audience seemed to be doing fine, but he just was in his own world of rhythm, and was totally off. We noticed it immediately, and watched him the rest of show. This happened on almost every song. He ended up screwing up the audiences claps almost every time. So my wife came up with the idea for Clap Camp, where the counselors help folks who would like to be participant clappers at upcoming concerts. They could come in and learn different beats, follow along with different instruments, and learn exercises to practice at home. I think it is a grand idea.

Crap for the most part, however during Call Me Lightning shows when they play the song "Pizza party" it causes a reaction of frantic claping from the audience which at the time seems really fucking cool. That's the only evidence I can provide from the top of my head dealing with hand claps being cool.

you guys are FUN!
Agreed about it being crap when the band does the "are you guys gonna muthafuckin PARTY or just STAND THERE?" type thing, but uninitiated, it's absolutely NOT CRAP.
And it's best in movies. Like The Apple.
"B!"
("I M!")
haha kerble, the title of this thread would make a better band name than Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Awful, awful CRAP! Especially since it's usually a roomful of the terminally Caucasian who couldn't clap in rhythm if they had metronomes jammed into their shirt sleeves.
Plus it ruins my favorite track on Portishead's live album. Fucksticks.

White People Can't Clap
Seriously, you guys think rhythmic clapping in a gospel context is crap, too? Not trying to bring out the race card.. just illuminating that there are other forums for rhythmic clapping other than rock bands at rock clubs.
