Pinback are the best version of a modern late 70s/early 80s XTC -- especially English Settlement -- we have today.. which is meant as a compliment... the timbre in the vocals are obviously different, of course. But listening to "Prog" and "Hurley", the comparison makes sense, I think.
Offcell is their best release to date, although I like all of the albums.
I'm hoping Zach does another Systems Officer release; and I hope Rob completes what was supposed to be the final "Thingy" album, either under that name or something else.

12I like these guys and all, I really do...
But do you ever sense that maybe they wrote the quintessential “Pinback” song with the first track on the first album, and they sort have been trying to come up with one as good ever since?
That’s probably a bit harsh… but I have felt that about their subsequent records…
Again, I like them though.

I'll just say that if the band had the choice to go back in history and erase three songs from their catalog, it would probably be "Tripoli", "Loro", and "Penelope" because these are the three songs that get screamed out at every show.. especially the latter two. I love those songs, but I'd like to hear different songs played during the show, ya know?
I disagree with "Tripoli" being the first and ever and only peak for the band.. every album has had one that equalled or topped it.. "The Grey Machine" is their best song.. all eleven minutes of it.

14One good song, plenty of other songs that sound like bad versions of the one good song.
Mandarin are (to my ears) what Pinback would sound like if they were better.
CRAP.

If I was them I would want to erase "Fortress" from existence. Without it, the last show I was at wouldn't have been ass packed with dumbass frat boys. I'd rather have people who knew them before the O.C. yelling for "Tripoli" than have to dodge dancing college chicks when they play "Fortress"...which is a shitty song anyway.

17"Soaked" just came on the internet radio. Maybe I'm on crack, but it reminds me of Hall and Oates' "I Can't Go For That." Let's get Rob Crow to work on that moustache already
