17"Permanent Smile" has loud drums and is poppy (not the lyrics, though). However, it is not from the early 90's, is not a cover (I'm fairly sure), does not have a girl singing background (although they multi-track his voice) and it was not on a comp. Probably not the song you're looking for.

18There is a Smog song on an old Kill Rock Stars compilation called "37 push ups". At least i think so anyway. I remember it being noisier than more modern Smog. I remember buying the compilation as it has a killer Boredoms tune on it called Pukuri. Is this possibly the one?
