I don't tend to study with music on, but today i managed to get some work done while the Garden State soundtrack droned on quietly in the background. Thanks Zach Braff!

John Fahey's Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes (or, really, any of his stuff up through the late 1960s) is not only good for this purpose, but also actually makes you a smarter human.

Lungfish's [insert any Lungfish record title here] works nicely on occasion, too.

As does Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II.

I would suggest listening to something that you haven't heard before.

It's the opposite, I think, for me. I've acquired and been listening to a shit ton of new music these days. Well, new to me anyway.

I can't listen to it and not pay attention to it.

It's the record that I may love more than any other that I could throw on and not pay attention to. I guess I don't do this partly because I don't want to "dis" a good record, but more because I don't want to fall into the habit of hearing it and tuning it out, glossing over it, or letting it become commonplace.

francoise hardy or any mid 60s french chanteuses... i also really like the les baxter/martin denny type stuff for studying...
