HOLY FUCK.

that episode was nuts. sure, the part at the end with Dex's sister was obviously going to happen, but still, that put me through the wringer. It was really sad an emotional for most of the characters, too. I don't think they'll wrap this up in one episode. this shit is gonna go to the next season. there's too much for 55 minutes.

I think that maybe Dexter's real dad was the chainsaw murderer (I don't think it could be harry, but that's not too much of a curveball, too considering Harry taught him how to hide his psychopathic tendencies from others, he could have easily hid that shit from his department. Rudy pushed dex towards the blood in the hotel room being spread by the electric chainsaw (as m'lady pointed out). SHe also pointed out that rudy had mentioned "maybe he (dex's real dad) slaughterted his family" when they were going through his old house.

My guess is that the secret being kept from Dexter is that he ate his mum.

I just finally got to watch the finale, it was really good to say the least. what a great show this developed into. I love the ending when he's walking through the crowd of people, and they left it open for another season.

man i feel like an asshead for thinking this was in reference to the cartoon network series.

I've seen about 4 episodes now. I think there's something kind of creepy about the revenge/eye-for-an-eye undercurrent that the show thrives on: "no no, it's OK to drug that person, wrap them up in plastic, torture and dismember them cause they're really, really bad." I guess you could say it's a "product of the times."

However it's an entertaining and fairly intelligent show and I'm trusting that it will address this sooner or later. But yeah, I feel a little guilty for watching it.

I think it's supposed to be creepy. Presenting that ethos is not the same thing as endorsing it. You're supposed to feel weird about sympathizing with Dexter. I like that kind of discomfort, because it occurs to you in moments of lucidity (where the commercials would be) when you get sucked in and realize, "Whoa. I was rooting for the serial killer there."

But then, the show is also messing with the definition of that term. Are serial killers soulless? Irredeemable? If they're not irredeemable, does the concept of "serial killer" still apply?

It's not exactly Mindwalk, but for a crime drama, it can raise some heady questions.

I don't think having a serial killer as a protagonist is creepy. It's that I think the show WANTS us to feel like "but it's ok, cause they're BAD people." Ideally, I'd like it to be a lot harder to like Dexter. It would make for a more interesting show.

The writers go out of their way to portray his victims as irredeemable shits. Why? Because to have Dexter killing either completely innocent people or liquor store robbers would be too much discomfort for the average viewer. I'd like that discomfort. I feel like right now, he's just a more severe Batman.

I have yet to see an episode where he (or the show) stops and asks "yes, this fucker is a child rapist but is his life really valueless? Should he be bound, gagged, tortured and mutilated for his crimes?" But of course he should still kill them: he's a fucking serial killer! Basically, I just wanna see them (his victims) be a little less two dimensionally evil.

It reminds me of the last Hannibal book/movie: "oh, he only eats the rude? Well then, now I have no qualms about rooting for him!"
