newberry wrote:Duke Ellington's "Far East Suite" sounds pretty swell to me. Also, Plush's "Fed" and "More You Becomes You" (that Steve fellow was involved in both of those, if I'm not sadly mistaken). What about "Music from Big Pink"? "There's a Riot Goin' On" has some inspiring, weirdly recorded sounds.

Oh wait, some of Al Green's records are probably my favorite sounding discs ever. "Let's Stay Together" and "I'm Still in Love With You" are likely the best sounding albums I've ever heard. Seems like there was a lot of good stuff around 1972ish.

With stellar songs and performances, it's hard to distinguish between that and the recording quality, if you know what I mean.

yeah, i really dig sly's recordings from that time period "fresh" is almost as good as "there's a riot goin on"

and "music from big pink" - which i'm glad u brought up, cuz that was recorded by John Simon, who is an amazing songwriter - he did an album a little bit after that entitled "john simon's album" - one of the lost treasures of that time (circa 1970)... similar to bill fay, and just as good...

also john simon recorded leonard cohen's first record, which he rarely gets credit for...

Sez me, in ascending order:

"An Evil Heat" - Oxbow
"At Action Park" - Shellac
"Rid of Me" - PJ Harvey
"Kenya" - Machito

And the #1 best sounding record ever.

"Spiderland" - Slint (fucking duh, dude)

= Justin

PS - The new Converge record would be up there if they hadn't double (+) tracked all of the fucking guitars. WTFD?

Fuuuuuuuuck.

As far as produced/recorded, the first one that pops out to me is Low's Things We Lost in the Fire. I'm not wild about most of the songs, and Low'd already sort of worn thin on me by the time this came out, but it's so clearly recorded that I find myself listening to it at least once a month. It's so good, that I feel like I can hear the vacuum tubes despite my iPod.

Jesus Lizard's Goat sounds fucking great.

The Led Zeppelin stuff sounds very good, mid-period Who as well. The Beatles records, (if you get the correct pressings) all sound terrific.

I think Dark Side... sounds pretty fucking good, but I'm old too...

A lot of the punk stuff: New York, LA and UK bands have great 'energy' and songs, but sometimes not the best sounding records, although there are of course exceptions. Some of those records are very noisy with a lot of tape hiss, but there still great, so who cares?

Early rock and roll, like Chuck, Buddy and Elvis usually sound great when from the original tapes.

Cheap Trick's debut comes to mind. I like the Jack Douglas recordings over any of the other stuff, rocks a lot harder.

Some of the California ringer music, like Steely Dan, does sound good, although I can't listen for more than a song or two before it gets on my fucking nerves.

The greatest hits Bill Withers album I own, with the champagne and caviar on the cover is amazing sounding!

Ditto on the Al Green...

I'm a sucker for the Mobile Fidelity Half-Speed 70's and 80's pressings, some of them sound a bit over mastered I guess, but still good and fun to collect.

Some of Neil Youngs albums sound very good, a lot of the Byrds stuff, Michael Nesmith's country trilogy is exceptional as well.

Forgot the Kinks: later period stuff, the Asylum years I believe have good sound quality.

The Heart album Dreamboat Annie is well recorded, sounds like Zeppelin.

ZZ Top records sound 'right' to me.

PIL Metal Box, the bass will shake your house and rattle the windows.

I like the Pop Group records, they are scrappy but magical with the vocals...

I could go on and on, so I'll stop now.

there was probably a thread on this before, and i don't remember what i wrote then, but off the top of my head here are some records i love, pure sound-wise

the silver jews - american water
the rapture - echoes
t rex - electric warrior
the modern lovers, self titled
pavement - wowee zowee
television - marquee moon
the wipers - is this real?

i guess i favour a drier sound with little reverb that lets me imagine the room rather than hear it.

yeah, i particularly like two red red meat albums for their recording -

bunny get s paid

& there's a star above the manger tonight

very textural stuf, and they used a lot of crazy mic distortions, as well as hi-fi - the drums on 'chinese balls' still sound amazing

Agreed. For me, the Ladradford album Steve did stands out for the same reasons. I only really like the first track, the rest of the album is fine, but the album sounds incredible.

Are Labradford still active?

Halo are a ridiculously abrasive "doom" band from Melbourne, Australia. They put out an album on Relapse called Body of Light. They refer to their recording process as "demixing". I love the sound of this album.
