Jesus. You have no idea.

I believe he does.

I believe he doesn't. Everything & anything can be overdone. Visual design is no exception.

Unless you're into visual wankery like some people are into Dream Theater.

do people seriously say that? like for real, i should care what media delivers music to your ears?

oh, 7" are not crap. from juke boxes to now. Where else can you get 2 songs and a little bit of artwork fresh and new for $5?

When my band did singles, I loved doing the layout and design. front cover, back cover, labels, etc. it was fun. of course i had a computer. the other guys in my band thought graphic design meant scissors and a glue stick.

They do. It is very sad. Especially when they spend 4 albums worth of money on one record. They're clearly very into their music.

I appreciate a well done seven inch. It is the clearest example of who your band is that one can have.

There is still a lot of crap released as seven inches. And they sadly seem almost pointless putting now, unless you are a hardcore band or have a cult of fans who will still by vinyl.

Still, if I had the money, I'd put out a seven inch in a second.

I'd be curious what detractors mean by "overdone" visual design in a 7". I'd like to see some examples.

Because I can tell you right now that the objections I'm hearing have less to do with any work and more with moronic whining about personality types.

It's been my experience that this kind of whining is easier to indulge in, and often stands in for the tougher work of recognizing the difference between a good idea / good execution and a shallow, stupid idea / lazy execution.

Unless they are largely in the dark about what they are doing, all bands design (again, using my broader definition). Dull bands are bands that do less design.

I guess I'm a just a bloated corpse, then, huh?

Well, are you really a bloated corpse then ??
Scary.
How is it down there ??
What are you listening to now ?

If you still buy those 7"s for a good reason, then they're not crap.
You're a DJ, you rely on those vinyls.
You collect those coloured vinyls, regardless of whether you like the music or not.
You can also collect everything, every single format released by your favorite band.
If you have a library to put all these stuffs then keep on 'collecting' them.
Maybe they would become rare one day & your great great grandchildren could sell them or donate them to the museums.

But while you still alive & breathing (unless you're a bloated corpse)...7"s just don't cut it anymore hence they become crap by the minute !
Even thesedays, people just carry their MP3 players...no more walkmans, no more Discmans.

I still keep LOTS of vinyls from those long gone years, but I'm not getting any new vinyl in my collections anymore.
Why ?
Because they are CRAP !

I'm curious about this for those in the know. Is $4.99 a fair price for a 7"? How much does it actually cost to press and package 1000 7"s? $4.99 seems like a lot, which is why I rarely buy new ones unless it's cool and unavailable on another format.

Mediocre sound is due to the pressing quality and playback equipment. It sure as shit isn't due to anything inherent to the 7" 45 RPM format, as I have some 7"s that kick balls.
