What do you find less great about post Adobe Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition)?
For me the older version is just more user friendly. I know where everything is and I like the design of it better. It's also much easier to crack.

if you want to spend cash, get reason. reason, rewired into protools, with synth/fx plugins in protools, is the optimal computer setup for what youre talking about.
for all these programs, you will probably need your own drum sounds to make beats. if you want drum sounds, let me know. i have so many its ridiculous. lots of them are 24-bit, including the ones recorded from hardware drum machines (including the tr-808, 909, 707, lots of roland, novation, and yamaha drum machines/keyboards), the ones sampled from vinyl records (vinyl drum samples are a classic part of the 90s rap sound, as in all those dj premier and rza and dre and pete rock beats), the ones recorded with an akg mic from a live drum set. then i have lots more. let me know and i will gladly email you whatever you want.
i also use acid and i might be really interested in some drums sounds, specially the ones from the live drum set and vinyl records. can you mail them? thanks!

Don't hold back noodles, tell us what you really think.
I've been thinking about paying for the upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0 so to just ask more questions: what is it about 2.0 that makes it the steaming pile?
I have Audition on a laptop and use it for editing while mobile, and I've never had a problem with Audition, just slow as hell laptop drives.
It has a rediculous, clunky interface that takes 3 times as long to load and redraw so your wasting half your resources to start with. It was also released long before it should have been and is full of glitches, crashes and general hardware incompatibility (it doesn't work with Edirol Firewire interfaces FFS!). I also got some really poor latency readings from it
compared to 1.5
Iirc they have re-mapped some of the keyboard shortcuts too, as in swapped them around from where they have been for about 5 versions. Not the end of the world but really, that is just really poor interface design. If I wanted to remap the keys, that is my choice, not adobe's.
They can work out the bugs eventually but the interface and general clunkyness isn't so easy to get round. Unless your really desperate to be able to use the spectral 'drawing' mode, I just can't see how it is worth the money if you already have 1.5
I'm interested to see how it ports to universal binary as I haven't found a decent mac editor that isn't a million pounds (logic, final cut) or doesn't lack a load of features. If they ditch the scripting I'll be pissed.

I do everything within Cakewalk Sonar 6 and I love it. I use Battery 3 as a VST instrument for the drums. It takes a lot of programming but nothing sounds better once you have the beat going. Sounds just like a real drummer and you can edit and add fills anytime you want.
I use Waves plugins for eq, compression, any effects. The new SSL plugins are phenomenal.
The important thing is getting a good, solid soundcard. I use an M-audio firewire audiophile. I've never had any problems with it.
Also put as much memory in your pc as it will take. Especially if you are going to use VST instruments and effects. Battery alone is a huge memory hog.
There is a huge learning curve with most programs and it takes a bit of time to get up and running with things sounding decent. I have been learning DAW stuff for over 5 years and I learn something new everyday.
If you want a quick fix I recommend Ableton Live as it is pretty easy to use and sounds good quick!

Fruity Loops is easy as hell to use, and with the XXL Producer Edition, and some good samples, its pretty awesome. People talk shit because they think the samples are shitty and its too simple. But, if you make your own samples, and play around for a month or so, you start to learn some really neat tricks that make beats sound awesome. It's not really one of those loop programs that is gonna try to emulate REAL drums, but in the end, no program can, and it always sounds fake and bad. It is more a program that in the hands of a creative mind is a fucking beast! Check it out.
Also, "warping" music is fun with AudioMulch. I think there is only a single version out there right now. It's sort of like a live processing tool that lets you really fuck shit up! Its fun as hell and really easy to use. it isn't really THAT customizable, you're pretty much stuck with what they give you, but each of the different effects and plugins has lots of options and you can do some cool stuff. Check that out.
Also, I have no problem with Audition 2.0. The only problem is that I need a faster computer.

Natch. That's handy as all get out.

I havn't thought of AudioMulch for some time. I remember playing around with it a while ago and having some fun. Has it matured much in the last two years?

Compare it directly to 1.5. You don't need a faster computer, adobe need to sort the software out. 2.0 offers very little over 1.5 and does everything else slower. Hardly an upgrade.

Live 5 is all you need. Now that 6 is out, I bet you can get it for a bargain.
Pretty easy to use, and designed to be used in live situations - hence the clever name - so you can play with sounds in real time all day long.
It's also a fine recording program.
Have a blast.

Natch=naturally. As in: of course if they ditch that I'll be pissed too. Sorry.
Oh, and back to the 1.5 vs. 2.0 stuff, how about the CD playlist stuff? It's so annoying that 1.5 doesn't allow saving of a CD playlist. Didn't they improve that in 2.0?
