I live in south philly and I get to smell the pretzels baking.

I like the idea of pretzels, but I think like cheesesteaks in philly, their execution leaves a lot to be desired.

my favorite philly foods:

tommy dinic's in the reading terminal market.

hoagies from chickie's (9th & Federal)

roast beef at cherry street tavern.


cheesesteaks, I've had them all, and they leave a lot to be desired. I guess John's roast pork.

you know, they definitely seem like a very real deal, distinctive place, with thought-out veggie options and rolls straight from sarcone's bakery, but i think i'd rather eat at the lorenzo's in the italian market (not to be confused with the south st. lorenzo's, where they basically hold their nose and lob extra greasy plain slices at the passing south st. mob). good deals on pizza too.

if we're just talking philly food in general

new harmony vegetarian restaurant in chinatown(and its affiliate, kingdom of vegetarians) -- kicks ass

tofu hoagies from fu wah, 47th and baltimore -- slammin'. since you're in south philly check out the place (cafe nhu or something) on 8th and christian that sells tofu hoagies -- they are good, and cheap, but i prefer fu wah.

tiffin, the new indian food delivery service, with a restaurant around 3rd and girard

horizons is an awesome vegan restaurant for occasions when you can spend like $18 an entree. it's worth it, magnificient

on the meat side of things, the pho places on washington ave are outta sight for meaty vietnamese stew. you want tripe?

damn i forgot to say -- you're in south philly? el jarocho is the best mexican place in philly. 13th and ellsworth.

if you like ethiopian you got abyssinia and dahlak in west philly

Every place i have lived in Philly for the last ten years has had a pretzel factory within 2 minutes walking distance. While at 10th and Carpenter i enjoyed so many delicious hot, fresh pretzels after bar time it was unbelievable. Now (unfortunitly) in the Northeast i have a pretzel factory open all day. I can not think of a better way to spend a dollar then on 5 hot, fresh, gorgeous pretzels.

Ive had pretzels in many places an i believe simple is best. Light on the salt and a touch of mustard. The only place in the world that has a better pretzel then Philly is Munich...and that goes without saying really.

You know, my feeling about what's wrong with philly is that there aren't enough jewish people here. I guess the same can be said for indians too. more indians = better indian food. some pakistanis too please.

went there once by accident looking for shelter in a torrential rainstorm. was not dressed correctly, yet the service was great as was the food. edamame hummus was awesome. some cute bridge and tunnel jersey girls were there playing "life in the big city." nice.

bridge and tunnel??? you must be from new york. we don't have a damn tunnel. also, the jersey burbs are closer than a lot of the PA burbs or even northeast philly, which is a massive burb of its own. i'm not going to play snob to the burbites -- i was raised in the city and it doesn't make me a better person or anything. when you're a kid you're not like getting all cultured or anything, you're still staying at home playing videogames or whatever, my mom didn't want me wandering the streets or anything, you know what i mean?

bridge and tunnel is a new york term, but I just thought it could work here. believe me, I was extolling the virtues of the suburban females.

no, born in philadelphia, raised in south jersey, went away for a long time, came back when my mom was dying from the evil cancer.

we do have a tunnel. it's on 76. life in the big city. it's a joke, because despite the hatred for trees down here, it's a friggin suburb.

I'm sorry, but there are not enough jews here in the city. where the fuck does one find a decent bagel? no, they all live in cherry hill.

there are different degrees on the urb-to-burb scale -- to me, basically the less dense, the less gridded, the less sidewalks, the more burby. wiggly roads with cul-de-sacs are burby. i'd say that philly has very urby and very burby areas, mostly it's somewhere in between. i kind of like areas that are in between, like in west philly, germantown or queens.
