"Answering Machine" by the Replacements still gets me when I hear it. It was one of my failed romance songs in high school. I associate "Good Morning Captain", "Aurora Borealis" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" with the same period. Not neccessarily sad songs, just nostalgia-loaded.

"Anthems of a Seventeen Year Old Girl" by Broken Social Scene bummed me out when I first heard it. Have a lot of memories with that track.

"History Lesson pt. 2" by the Minutemen bums me out, looking at the lyrics in retrospect to what happened to Boon. I had a friend I was close to as well who was killed way before his time, and his influence on my life is immeasurable.

Funny someone should mention Magnetic Fields. This one always made me so sad... Maybe because it sounded dated (somehow) even when it came out"

all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain
and all the dope in new york couldn't kill this pain
and all the money in tokyo couldn't make me stay
all the umbrellas in london couldn't stop this rain

Yes, that whole record makes me sad, and happy...

That, and Prince's "Sometimes It Snows in April". Fuck Off...

Oh yes!

And Cat Power's "Color and the Kids", which might be the greatest happy-sad song of all time...

That song by Tears for Fears that plays at the end of "The Breakfast Club'.

That song is fucking BEAUTIFUL and sad, and I don't like any eighties new wave pop.

Someone concur so that I don't feel like a toolbox.
