Well,

I cheat abit....cause I am cheap. I am really a fan of the Sansamp Bass DI. Really dig it alot. So I use one of the following techniques:

First I use a Fender P-Bass...is there another rock bass (okay, okay besides a Rickenbacker or a lovely MusicMan...but again, I am cheap...)

1. SansAmp....to "tape" and the 2nd feed from the DI to a bass amp. I cheap out here and use a late 80s Fender solid-state 100w 15" thing. (Sure, I would love to get an Ampeg tube head but what can you do...)

2. SansAmp to the bass amp for extra "whatever" and the 2nd SansAmp feed to "tape".

3. Solamente SansAmp to "tape"....no bass amp.

I mic the bass amp with an Audix D3...sometimes a TLM103. I am real happy with the bass sounds I get. But I am simple here....poppy percusive bass with varying levels of growl depending on the song. If I need rounded bass then I will use my digits....but I havent needed that yet.
