The only 'serious' advice I can think of is to try and limit opportunities for them to see you/get at you for a while. From what you say, and from what I know of British youth, it sounds like you're targeted because you're there. You happen to be around at a regular time, you aren't dressed the way they are dressed; so, they chuck a cig at you. If you're not around at a time convenient to them, they're unlikely to go to any great lengths to track you down for a kick on an afternoon - sixteen year olds hanging around in the afternoon tend towards laziness. If you break them of the 'habit' of picking on you once a day, they might decide you're not a safe enough bet for sport and take up, oh, reading to old people or something.

In other words, try and make hassling you more trouble than it's worth.

You can probably be sure, too, that if they're giving you hassle, then they'll be giving other people hassle, and causing other problems around the place. There's a decent chance the police will know of them already, even if they can't touch them for anything. Keep your fingers crossed they get caught with a nicked car or something.

give them a shellac CD or a couple of burned CDs and tickets to a game or a movie theater gift certificate, and tell them your mom is sick and you would appreciate if they didn't bother your mother or you. Tell them you don't like violence because you have been down that road and fucked some people up bad, but you will do it if it's necessary.

It would probably be the best money you have ever spent, you could probably get by spending 15 pounds or whatever the rate is.

We had a kid like this that would come in to the record store I worked at years ago. My manager, Joe, was at first very firm with him. Wouldn't tolerate his bullshit, would throw him out of the store, threaten to call the police. Whenever this kid came back in Joe would be nice until him unless he got out of line. The kid ended up coming around and they are friends to this day. This kid was pretty hard, and didn't encounter alot of people like Joe who would just ask how things were going in his life and things like that. I don't know how that relates to your situation, but it's something.
