Wood Goblin wrote:So my brother and I really liked Operation: Mindcrime when we were knee high to a grasshopper, and we decided to see Queensyrche in the late 90s at a show in which they planned to play that entire record. Most of the concert wasn't so great, but Mindcrime, that was fine. At the end of the set--"Eyes of Stranger" closed the set, but I'm sure I don't need to remind you of that--Geoff Tate started running around in a giant circle across the stage, just as the song was building to a crescendo. As the real Geoff Tate is running around in circles, there is a film of Geoff Tate playing on huge screens on each side of the stage; in that film bit, Tate is running toward the camera (really, he's running toward the audience--here he comes!).
Then, just as Tate-on-film jumps into the camera and a graphic of breaking glass appears on the film, Tate-on-stage dives off the back of the stage, into the darkness. It was perfectly timed. It was also totally, totally awesome. I will not apologize for appreciating the awesomeness of this moment.
As I write this, I have goosebumps. I cannot talk about this moment without getting goosebumps.
Ah, this is beautiful. I also went to that concert. Suicidal Tendencies opened. Ha!
Operation:Mindcrime will always be stupid great in my eyes, but just about everything else they did was garbage (well, ok, i'll still give 'em "Jet City Woman," but everything pre-
Mindcrime and post-
Empire is pretty atrocious), and even my i-still-listen-to-Poison-now-and-again brain cannot justify this:
Overall, CRAP with a robust WF for
Mindcrime.
PS: I found this while image searching for a suitably ridic photo of the band:

The self-titled release and
Rage For Order were good. I couldn't get into
Operation: Mindcrime. Their drummer Scott Rockenfield gets a big not crap for the ridiculous mounted toms he used in the video for "Gonna Get Close To You." Check 'em out at the 2:04 mark.

I reckon I still have O:MC (as hardcore QR fans probably refer to it) on scratched vinyl. I actually
battled with this record, so convinced was I that it was an excellent example of intelligent modern rock.
The riff from 'Sister Mary' is NOT CRAP, as are some of the other riffs, but the record as a whole is obviously CRAP.
Or NOT CRAP.
Jesus, I don't know.

Saw 'em open for Metallica on the And Justice for All tour. The most memorable thing about that show is that I got so high that I couldn't remember which Hartford Parking Garage my car was in. It took me hours to find it, by which point some garages had closed for the night and I was nearly in tears with frustration and exhaustion.
By the way, "Silent Lucidity" is one of the worst song titles I've ever heard in my life. Self-serious crap.

Not Crap.
I don't need to line up with people who consider Sonic Youth to be a "great guitar band".
It's a matter of personal preference.

A few years ago I had a roommate. Dude was an o.k. guy, he meant well, but by the end of the year we clashed big time. He would come home all fucked up at 3am and crank some Ludicris CD, as I tried to sleep in the next room, having to get up at 5am for work. This got on my nerves, amongst other things. Dude was also obsessed with that fake lesbian band (Tatu?).
Anyway, out of the blue one day, he shows up wearing this ratty old jean jacket.....totally not his "business student" style. He said "Check it out! Its my old jacket from early in high school!!!". He turns around to show me the back......on which he had painted with the logo from Empire.
Wish I would've known him back then.

I don't know what's funnier- the fact that you genuinely like garbage like this band, or the fact that you think your shitty taste makes you some kind of maverick iconoclast.
