maybe i'm a luddite, i put off getting a cell phone until last year, but to me it's just another example of something you don't need until you have it.
i have a cell phone, digital camera, ipod, computer... what will this thing do for me that any of these other gadgets can't?

get rid of your ipod, cellphone and camera. it's those three things, plus internet, email, sms and chat, videos and more ways to communicate, really. plus, new computing technology. basically, it's a mini computer that fits in your pocket. i'm down with the idea that it's too expensive and i think it's dishonest to have it only work with one cell company, so i'm willing to wait for these two things to change.
i can just imagine having this thing on tour. instant directions to clubs if i get lost (including google maps), with instant access to phone numbers. watch movies on long rides. chat with friends on the road. fuck, blog about touring while in the van. post here while in the van. i could have used one of these last year when one of our shows got cancelled. instant access to my email, so i can get in touch with clubs or other bands other than the phone (sometimes, that's my only contact for people). if it had a GPS tracking system on it, that would be even more amazing (i bet someone will make a widget for that - i'm sure it's not that difficult to get GPS on the phone).
i mean, it's almost endless what you can do, depending on what you would use it for. non-stop communication, that's been the key to progress over the last 100 years.

very true. you can also use a gramophone to listen to music, if you're so inclined to not to go the symphony first.

yuck. that's the crux of it right there i guess, how connected a person wants and needs to be.
i can watch video on my cell, i can IM with it, send emails, take pictures, it's got a gps plugin, i rarely use any of it though. it's not one of those big space ship keypad ones either, just a little LG flip phone that cost $50 after rebates.
