The range and specificity (e.g."80s Sonic Youth", "early Mobb Deep") of his cited influences suggest someone keen to demonstrate that they're not just a Britpop babe...

The music is not loading on that page, but I will be surprised if I prefer it to A Storm In Heaven.

I don't hold with Neil Young being in this category either. My favourite mit Crazy Horse records are my favourite Neil Young records.

I'll put forward John Phillips for this list, as Wolf King... is playing as I write this.

Crazy Horse doesn't count. Neil was never in that band--he took an existing band and appropriated it as his backing band.

He was, however, in both the Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. His solo work released during and after his tenure in those bands is much better than the records those bands released.

Agreed. And while we're on the country rock tip, how about Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and Mike Nesmith? I value their solo careers more than what they did with their respective bands.

Curtis Mayfield is a tough, tough call. I love his solo records, but I'm not sure they outweigh all those great Impressions records. I think the Impressions had more great songs.

Probably not popular choices, but I'd say Chris Brokaw and Mark Kozelek.

Also, I'd be hard-pushed to choose between Bob Mould's first solo record and any Husker Du record.

Also also, Dave Lee Roth.

Will I be shot if I admit that I like a couple of Aimee Mann's solo records a great deal?

Built to Spill originally formed as Doug Martsch + a rotating crew of backup musicians, but I suppose they don't count, as they eventually morphed into a real band.

Good call on Elliot Smith.
