The M-Powered PT with the Delta is comparable in price to getting the Firepod. So, I gotta look at options. The Firepod is probably going to be less expensive in the end, because I'd have to buy a few extras with the M-Power stuff. Though, having PT is compelling (I already have an M-Box).

Sweet find, man. This could very well work best, since we could also use it with some powered speakers and use it as a recording system/pa.

I have one of those that I use mainly for demoing ideas at home but I have brought it up to the practice spot and recorded jams/ demos there too. It's really easy, inexpensive and sounds okay. I've had it for a little over a year and never had a problem with it. It comes with cubase, but I've never installed it.
I run it into my g4 ibook and record on either logic express or garageband depending on how lazy I feel at that moment. I think it would really fit the bill for what you're looking for. The only think I don't like about it is that the phantom power isn't switchable on a per channel basis. Once it's on it's on all the xlr channels.

I have the phonic version of that alesis mixer (called a helix firewire 18) I think it's been superceded by something newer so it could probably be had v' cheaply. I've used it as a mixer for live shows/ practices, and done alot of practice recordings.. it's good because you can route things to the firewire but keep them out of the speakers which can be handy in the practice context. When I bought it i went for that over alesis as I saw alot of stuff online moaning about the alesis drivers not working with the new mac's but they must have sorted this out by now?

if you have pre-amps the delta should be a better choice, so you can select pre-amps that are probably better than the firepod's .
btw, anybody knows about the quality of the pre-amps in those?

They won't blow your mind but are fairly honest, quiet and have adequate gain ( I have not had to max them out on anything including cheap chinese ribbons and old EV's). I have not yet encountered a situation where I have found myself saying " DAMN THOSE FIREPOD PREAMPS !", though I do wish they could take a little more before clipping but I still get plenty of usable signal before that happens. The unit itself has been very reliable.

I purchased a Korg D888 about a month ago. I've been very happy with it. It's low on the bells and whistles, high on ease of use and flexibility. Records in wav format, internal 40GB drive, 8 channels at once, no communications/driver issues with a PC, can act as a reasonable live mixer for small ensembles. Portable and bulletproof.
Highly recommended.
