I remember once driving and listening to some particularly slack pirate ragga station, playing a particularly slack record with echoing gunshots on it. The DJ obviously had one of those cheapo DJ mixers with the 'effects' buttons (laser beam, machine gun) on it and he was adding extra gunshots over the top.

That's not what I wanna use it for, but hey.

My last band used a Zoom Sampletrak for exactly this type of nonsense, although perhaps the sample time/quality would put you off.

the zoom one is good. i still insist that if you can find one, the best one is the 303. basically, for the four knobs on the top. you have lots of effects, delays, lo-fi, distortions, they are FUN and easy to use, no menues, all very "analog" in their functionality. i loved that machine way back.
of course, it's more than you need, but it's good stuff.

Also, what about a small/used digital multi-tracker? The tiny Boss one (br4?) isn't much more than £100, and I doubt there's much latency in operational terms since there are no moving parts...

The Boss SP series is not at all complicated. It's the easiest thing around.
The 202 may not give you enough time.
The 303 is much fancier, but still easy to use.
Both are really cheap these days.

That looks good. You generally know when you buy Boss stuff that it's going to do the job well and not be stupid. There was a very similar box by Roland that my friend Joe (Germlin) used which was good and simple.

That's always a giveaway for a pirate station. I think when I heard a pirate station for the first time about a year ago, it was the "battie boy murdah, murdah" ragga lyrics at 2pm in the afternoon which gave it away. I think the gun blast effects were original and not supplementary.

the Hi-Fi use the DR sample 202 it works great for simple sampling not really great for editing but really we sample ourselves more than dialog or "beats" so for us it works great...
