In defense of that Haydon fella's ignorance:

First he doesn't say where he's from. This was important for everyone but more so to you yankies.

Second - he might be young

Third - if he is young (and American) it should highlight serious flaws in what is taught in schools.
Why would people (especially young people) know about it if no-one talks about it? (question - is it taught in American schools?)

If you don't know something there should be no harm in asking.
If nothing else it proves those whiners who say a forum like this is good for nothing but talking about bands wrong.

Ignorance is not quite the same as stupidity.

Oh and great pictures BTW

True. Ignorance is not knowing something. Stupidity is being on the largest respository of knowledge mankind has ever known and asking a music-related message board a question about a historical event.

For chrissakes, almost all browsers even have a search engine field right there in the corner.

Google first. Ask second.

My dad was a plain clothes detective when this happened, I was ten years old.

I remember him being pretty cheesed off that they called every cop in the city to go down there, even guys like my dad who had an undercover car and all that. He hadn't been a beat cop for years.

Not all the cops were busting heads, my dad told me it was all he could do to avoid getting beaned by hippie-tossed bricks.

I still have the helmet he wore, and the riot baton.

Apparently he was ahead of his time.

Or, if we apply the Ty Webb method and Google First, then ask second, we get this in regards to the Circle A as used by Anarchists:

History of anarchist usage

The first recorded use of the A in a circle by anarchists was by the Federal Council of Spain of the International Workingmen's Association. This was set up by the freemason, Giuseppe Fanelli in 1868.[11] It predates its adoption by anarchists as it was used as a symbol by freemasons amongst others. According to George Woodcock, this symbol was not used by classical anarchists. It was first used by a small French group, Jeunesse Libertaire ("Libertarian Youth") in 1964. Circolo Sacco e Vanzetti, youth group from Milan, adopted it in and in 1968 it became popular through out Italy. From there it spread rapidly around the world.[12]

And now by further application of the Sherlock Holmes method, we can now deduce that the guy in that picture is probably French or Italian, and he just happened to be in Chicago, and decided to help out with the protests, and that the jewel is hidden in the last remaining bust of Napoleon.

Think about the hippies under the scrutiny of the police. Now imagine them carrying bricks around to throw at cops. Think about how implausible that is.

Now that he's gone, I occasionally wonder how often my dad lied to me outright while I was growing up. Probably not too often, but sometimes. If my dad was a Chicago cop and involved in the 1968 police riot, I'm pretty sure he would have lied to me about it.
