Do you mean the master volume V4b's?
Approximately what years are you talking about?

There's a band who wants to come record in my studio who has offered to pay me with one of these amps.
I think I am gonna take it.
Yeeha.

I had a V-4B, which had a most awesome bass tone.

I must respectfully disagree with tmidgett on this one. Keep the 7027's. They are available and will last a looong time when properly biased. The 6550's are too sterile and SS sounding.

I have a 76 VT-22 put inside of a headbox. Best musical purchase I have ever made.

I sold my V4 head to pay for my Mosrite. As awesome a guitar as it is I still have mixed feelings about it.

I HIGHLY recommend retubing the V4 with some quality 6550s if you wanna play bass or clean, loud guitar thru it.
I've been using Sovtek's in my V4. I'm going to retube it in a couple months before we record again. Any recommendations?

I found out that the guy from Comets on Fire uses an Ampeg V4-B as well. The guy gets some absolutely killer sounds on Blue Cathedral.

do you have any thoughts on the two varieties, i.e. the first ones with no master volume and the later ones with the master volume?
grazie
I have owned both and there is no difference in the quality to my way of thinking. I had the non-master volume converted to a master volume with no adverse affect and it looked original. There is an external master volume box you can buy for the pre-master volume models anyway.
These are terrific amps that have so versatile a tone section you can make them sound like whatever you want. You can get a manual from
www.ampegv4.com. Among other things it contains settings that show you how to create the sound of a Marshall or a Fender or whatever.
You can still get parts for them from
www.fliptops.net including the external master volume. They sell kits for repairing Ampegs among other things.
I got tubes from
www.the tubestorestore.com and they were very helpful and well informed.
