Going on the records here.
The Pixies were unique - no-one has come close - taking pop as far as it can possibly go.
Melvins didn't occupy the same the same space.

Pixies I love. Frank's a tremendously gifted pop song writer, Kim's voice breaks my heart, etc.
Melvins I've never heard outside of seeing them live once. And then I didn't get it. Just sounded like boring sludge.
So Pixies by the distance from the Earth to Jupiter.

This "Thunderdome" matchup does not even make sense.

Pixies.
Great records.
Melvins are cool. Just doesn't hit me like the Pixies does.
Right in the rice and beans.

It does seem a little like "What's better: Dogs or Cheese?".

Melvins, hands down. I got into Melvins way before Pixies, sure, I dig Pixies but sometimes I get bored with them.

The Melvins for me. Nothing the Pixies ever did grabbed my attention like "Houdini" did.

since i posted it, i should explain. i think it's a legit matchup in the sense that each band had an unprecedented take on dynamics (and soft/loud arrangements), both had some killer distorted guitar tones, both were very influential and have some sort of "sacred cow" status / cult followings (although i'd say the pixies get more mainstream appreciation), and both were around and making music at about the same time (though, thankfully, the melvins have continued to this day).
anyhow, i got the idea for this thread because me and a friend had debated this the other night. he was talking about the importance of the pixies and argued that the melvins descended from that style. i replied that the melvins were around a bit before the pixies, and that i thought they were a better band anyways.
i do admit that it's kind of a not-legit matchup though. for instance, the melvins are winning... but the pixies are a great band, it's kind of unfair to pit them against the melvins.

I concur.
