I tried to Google how francophones spell their laugh, whatever it actually sounds like. No such luck here either, but I did find out that there are several therapeutic "laughter clubs" (not to be confused with comedy clubs) in France. Definitely not something that would fly in the States, but it seems like a good idea. At least some field recordings from a club like that would be interesting.

Nah, it was a play on the French n'cest pas (is that how you spell it?) meaning "riiiiiight?"

My drummer and his GF went to the Deaf Comedy Jam in NYC, which is, no shit, a deaf comedy club. Apparently they applaud by doing "jazz hands."
