A few years ago I would have thought a band named after a slightly obscure pop culture reference would be cool but these days a lot of shitty, trendy bands do it so it's best to steer well clear.
Example: The Fratellis.
Music so awful it makes me want to dislike The Goonies.

Does a movie character count? If so, then not crap.

Also... Swearengen was a real person so maybe they didn't name their band after a TV character.

Damn, that's a deep cut.
Why?
Sorry, i meant that in the metaphorical "deep album cut" way. As in, "Damn, that is an obscure-ass Transformers reference. Well played."
I had to explain it, though, so my metaphor was weak.

Nah. Movie characters work better, but it's still a fine line.
Pussy Galore is great. But
Goldfinger? That's pretty much crap.

That's the one!!
The only one.
Oooo! You know what's more CRAP than naming a band after a TV character? Naming a
genre after a TV character.
Mathrock!
Sorry.

It's okay if it's one that virtually no one could identify.

I remember hearing about a band in the eighties called the Herb Tarlicks, and I thought that was pretty funny, but I never heard the band. Maybe they sucked.
Hmmm...should I maybe not call my band the Sweathogs then? Or how about the Daniel Desarios?
