I enjoy imagining Mark laying across the top of a grand piano on the opening track.

Dead drunk and drooling on the strings, no doubt.

I highly doubt that Steve approached an artist regarding recording. That would be absolutely atypical of past behaviour.
Also, I love the Fall to this day but I hope to hell I never have to deal with MES on a professional or personal basis. He is definitely the most difficult man in the world, I'm not sure it would be worth the inevitable trauma.

The John Peel/MES arrangement!
It worked well for them to never officially meet.
Congrats on 6000, Tommy!

Well, from Slug Magazine in 2005:
Slug Magazine wrote:SLUG: I had to laugh back in the late 80s and early 90s when you were doing more electronic stuff; there was a backlash among the supposedly cool people here, like, ‘The Fall sells out.’
MES: Yeah, [Steve] Albini and all that bull … you know he wanted to do the new LP?
SLUG: That might be interesting from a production standpoint.
MES: Oh, fuck off.
SLUG: Who produces you now?
MES: Me.
So maybe not this Fall album, but possibly another recent album. However, this could just be Mark bullshitting.

Mark E. Smith has made an insane amount of quality music, but I honestly think the man may actually be insane.

6000!
I heard a story once about MES soiling himself 10 minutes before The Fall were due to go on stage in Edinburgh, leading to a frantic trouser-hunting mission on the part of the promoter.
Also...
Vinyl Justice!

I vaguely recall an interview where Steve said he'd like to have recorded Neil Young, AC/DC, The Fall and a few other bands. I think he meant for the hell of working with bands who had created amazing music in the past. The way this usually works is someone reads said interview before doing another interview with MES. So the question ends up being framed or received as "Steve Albini says he wants to record an album by The Fall" or whatever.
MES presumably knows very little about Steve and is also batshit insane to boot.

Years of copious chemical consumption does have it's drawbacks.
