So what's the proper technique? What part of your head do you make contact with so as not to knock yourself out? Wouldn't it hurt the headbutter (a lot) regardless?

it doesn't hurt.

you're hitting someone with the hardest and most sturdy part of your body. you aim to hit them somewhere soft. the nose. avoid the teeth.

You basically use the bony part of your head just above your forehead as a hammer. And yeah, it does hurt a little bit, but that's nothing compared to what the other guy feels.

It's very possible to break somebody's nose or even shatter a cheekbone.
