A pal of mine, James, who saw it claims Big Black played with a stooges cover band that Mr. Albini threw bottles at.
They toured after they announced that they were going to break up. I am not sure how a band can tour when they've broken up, unless there is some strange legal status surrounding bands as tax entities.
Anyway,
their final tour diary covers the Oz jaunt. A fun read.

Chicago's southwest suburbs are highly underrepresented on this ongoing Shellac world tour.
Would it kill you guys to play Champs in Burbank just once?

yeah, that was the claim - something to do with tax,so there's an 'announcement' that the band doesn't exist, and that the members are going on holiday.
I am aware of a few bands doing this way back in the 80s due to stupid Australian Tax Laws about touring foreign acts, which was aimed at huge acts who played stadiums but was also inflicted on much smaller bands. This was a while ago and I certainly wasn't told this by a band member (obviously), but by a guy who assisted with said Australian tour and claims to have met them and so on. He now lives in NZ and makes noise improv, so it's kind of hard to check but that's the story.
I dunno, ask one of them
the tour dairy is pretty funny, yep.

This is all nonsense. Nothing like that happened. We went on a normal tour, with the plan that the band would wrap up when it was over.

What about this?
Big Black played with a stooges cover band that Mr. Albini threw bottles at.
The Stooges cover band part I can believe, but not the
bottle throwing.
Unless you were throwing bottles of much needed shampoo,
that is.
