Very true. That reminds me of the time I was in LA at a mexican restaurant. Before we ordered, we asked the bus boy where he likes to eat. He said at home.

I wonder when Chicago is going to start getting Del Taco. Burgers & Burritos, together again!

There was a place on Wabash, across the street from Columbia College, that served both thai food and burgers. It later became a full-fledged thai place, I suspect after the tuition tripled and a more "high-brow" class started registering at the school.

Avondale has some great Mexican and Thai food.

Mexican: Las Traspasada, 3144 N. California Ave (corner of Elston & California)

Thai: Dharma Garden, 3109 W.Irving Park Road (Irving Park Rd. near Albany)

Avoid el Ranchito in logan square. it's disgusting. Also avoid the Spice (thai) in logan square. It's edible but not great. I've heard many people claim el cid to be the best mexican but i haven't been there yet so i can't say.

I raise a big red flag to Dharma Garden. THe food was kinda bland, the fake meat was more fake than meat and the service was pretty lame. For example, our appetizers came 30 minutes before our meal, however one entre came with the apps.

Anyway, the food wasn't that good. And none of my vegetarian friends who took me there felt it was worth the trip.

you had a bad experience, but i've eaten there 4 or 5 times and my/girlfriend's dishes are always pretty good to excellent.

the service can be lame though. and they overcharged my card once and it was a pain getting it fixed.

yeah, everyone else's dishes were bad (mine was excellent! it's hard finding a really good fake sesame chicken) and i'm a little more cautious about it, but fuck.. i've had many bad Thai experiences.

Mexican.. hmmm.. i haven't found anything too exceptional. i do like Flo quite a bit (East Village) but that's more Mexican-inspired/fusion/yuppie. the flavors are wonderful though.
