Meat bees is a west coast term, I think. And the term comes from the fact that yellow jackets will bite chunks out of the lunch meat from your sandwich, which can be sort of alarming the first time you see it.
I have also seen roadkill crawling with yellow jackets in the late summer, early fall.
They're horribly aggressive, too.
You'd know if you had yellow jackets burrowing under your porch when you went after them, because they'd come right back after you.
