I have some sort of the same story but in reverse.
one of my best friends when i was 15-16 years old, he was a great guitar player and he introduced me to sonic youth, melvins, lydia lunch, and various noise acts.
he move to spain 5 years ago. one year in spain and he became an yngwie malmsteem fan and some sort of shredding virtuoso and listens to power metal and neo-classical all day long. wtf.

Pat Metheney is not so shocking in context. I don't listen to him much, but he's made a sincere contribution to the musical overmind, and I think people pick up on that even if its outside their usual genres.

I did a spell studio programming full time, and worked on a French album for a few months. It was a really cool project in that it brought together a lot of talent, had a reasonable budget from Universal, and the main man was a *huge* Beatles fan. We ended up in Abbey Road doing the strings and some of the other production team were also serious Beatles heads, pulling out DATs of obscure sessions with John giggling on acid in the background etc, so its fair to say the Beatles bar was raised pretty high. Towards the end of the album sessions, our man played a CD of "We All Stand Together" by McCartney/frogs, and in all seriousness announced this as belonging up there with the Beatles at their best.

Also my pal who has an entirely respectable and somewhat huge indie rock collection, drunkenly announced how good Celine Dion was, especially "My Heart Will Go On". Both of these moments were kinda beyond asking the usual WTF do you mean, it was more like a quiet dawning of "Ah, well that changes things around here!"

Except that's on San Quentin, and they didn't have that one. Maybe they thought they were buying the one with "Sue" on it and fucked up.

On a larger scale, I can't believe how many people around here who have lived in the city their entire lives listen to this new country "US 99" shit all the time. I've noticed it with all these fucking working-class Republicans at my job, they must have gotten used to it during the summers when they go boating up in Wisconsin. Now it's all they listen to. Goddammit, I would listen to ANY horrible rock band from my 70s childhood or 80s adolescence before Toby Keith or whoever the fuck.

'Ghost of Stephen Foster' is a great song.

My best friend's life ambition is to be a housewife. She's from Oklahoma and wears pretty skirts and pearls when she goes to bars and concerts.
