Personally I can't think of a better way to prime the public's pump with regard to disclosure about alien contact than to have a former astronaut fire the opening salvo.

So this story came on the news last night
when I went to my parents for dinner.
My Mom made an interesting observation.

She said she remembers the Pope recently saying something about aliens
and they are a possibility and part of god's plan.

she said "isn't it odd he mentioned that...and now this"

as if the pope somehow has information about aliens and
is sending out a preemptive strike
so when the proof comes out that aliens exist he can say
"see i told you! part of god's plan!"

The pope believes all manner of crazy shit though - gays are bad, condoms are evil, being a nazi wasn't THAT bad...

My father, his family and a couple of surviving neighbors all told me about such an, uh, event in the late 1960s in north Texas. Every now and then, me or my brother will bring it up at family Christmas, kind of mockingly. They'll respond: "Oh, yeah that was strange. UFO's. Remember when that silent, house-sized UFO flew a few yards over our house?" "Yup. Pretty weird." And then they just kind of move on. Apparently, most of the block walked outside and took a look (cops came too). I've always been a bit embarrassed by it. But lately, I've grown less skeptical about such things.
