Always fun!

I don't think I would ever mention someone's recent weight gain unless they brought it up or we were having some kind of throw down.

People know this about themselves.

I disagree with you 110%.

People put weight on themselves. They shove, kuma burger after kuma burger into their mouths and gain weight. Most(see above post) have control over that. They can go to the gym, go on a diet, or both.

A man, or in the odd occasion a woman, has no control over hair loss. So, that's the dick move if you have to choose a trait to pick on.

Until recently, I was always chubby, then fat, then just chubby, then fat, yadda yadda, continued for years.

I always got shit from my friends and yes, it always sucks and yes it always sticks in your noodle.

I have this one friend who has a massive beer gut but is a tiny fellow. He used to always call me "fat ass" in front of a lot of people (the worst) and such. Now he gets it really bad.

This is fucked up. Don't do it.

I'm getting a little soft in the middle. I'm not running as much as I used to and probably not eating as well as I should. I know this, but having it pointed out still pisses me off. So much so I usually retort with something potentially hurtful. I'm not that vain, but there is obviously some vanity there.

When I was fit, as a triathlete, I didn't mind people telling me that I was too thin.

I went on a low carbo diet once too. Big mistake. I was training 5 days a week and was tired all the time. I didn't connect the lack of carbs with the lack of energy. Duh. I thought it was something serious and was actually diagnosed with Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome. What a fucking idiot.

With all due respect, your friend is sort of a cock.

Maybe I'm trying to lessen my own shame, but I think calling a friend "fat ass" in front of a group of people is more incendiary than calling a friend "tubby" with no one around.

I'm bald/thinning due to over-processed hair in the early 90's.

Sorry John, they're both dick moves. Picking on people, especially when it goes beyond friendly give and take, sucks, no matter what it is about.

Like I said, context makes a big difference in whether it is tolerable.

I do find that the people who make the majority of these types of jokes are way thin-skinned when it comes to teasing in their direction.

Sounds to me like you might be a wee bit touchy about the hair loss issue.

High protein/low carb diets can make you fat because they send your body into starvation mode and your body starts eating muscle/increasing body fat.

Also, your brain feeds off of calories, so you cut off nourishment to your brain. That's kinda where the whole meatheaded jock cliche comes in, because those guys are imbalanced.

Being strong and athletic is fine, you can pull it off at an advanced age, and that doesn't necessarily mean looking like Iggy.

Yes, this is where the context of the remark comes into play.

Neither sunlore nor I is talking about doing this to someone who is actually balding.

What kind of turkeys do you think we are?

This is not true at all. It is in some peoples' control, but not everyones. I eat less/healthier and exercise more than most of the thin people I know. I have never eaten a whole kuma burger, even a veggie burger, in one sitting... I can ride my bike farther and walk longer than most people. In high school I was an athlete, on the swim team and the water polo team, and still I was "stout". I just got the shitty draw out of the metabolism pool.
A few years back I did go all out and got pretty thin, as thin as I get anyway. It was really unhealthy. I was eating less than 1400 calories a day and running on the elliptical for 3 hours a day. My doctor told me to stop as I was losing muscle and I developed a pretty serious heart condition due to overexercise and undernourishment. And I still looked chubby. So fuck all of that. Other people will look at me and think I'm unhealthy or whatever but I challenge you fuckers to a leg wrestling match; I will flip your bony ass.

To answer the original question, no I would never bring it up to a male or female friend.
