I gotta tell ya, I'm a bigger fan of the sandwich girl. They seem perkier, funnier, and they spend their days handling greasy cold cuts.
That and there's something about the food industry as opposed to the drink industry where I'm more likely to be called "hon" or "babe". I understand it's not a come on, it's just being cordial, and it sort of brightens my day.

Right, but would you rather have uncomfortable awkwardness at the coffee counter a few mornings after the one-nighter as she tells you "this one's on the house" while her little coffee klatch points and snickers in your general direction whilst whispering something OR a few months of a hot girl who brings you home free sandwiches "just because"?
On top of that, sandwich girls have bigger tits in my experience.

By the way, the coffee shop staff: Generally friendly, haven't met a nasty one yet. NOT CRAP.

When a coffee chick makes a heart out of foam on top of my coffee I imagine that she made it just for me. Much in the same way that when a Subway sandwichess handles my cold cuts without gloves, I like to imagine that she went to the bathroom without washing her hands.

I worked in a coffee shop in Wicker Park for awhile back in the early '90s. It was a shit job. The owner was a smug asshole and the hipster customers seemed to think that free refills meant $1.25 rents them a table for 8 hours. Every day we'd get these groups of idiots hanging out all day scribbling in journals and sketchbooks, smoking and chatting, and then they'd leave like 60¢ in nickels and dimes. Fuckin' jerks.

My neighborhood coffee shop is a nice little combination coffee place and print & graphics shop. They offer free WiFi and the staff is always pleasant and prompt and they have pretty decent coffee.

There's a Starbucks across from campus, and the baristas there are all SO NOT INTO working there.

We refer to it as the Punishment Starbucks. It's where you go when you piss off your manager at a ritzier Starbucks.

The kids from school, I am sure, are not that nice to these baristas. I am sure because when I go in there and say "please" and "thank you", the look of disbelief I get is priceless.

I would not like to be a barista.
