Micing Detuned-cabs

FWIW, when I was interning in some Israeli studio, the engineer mic'd the guitar cab with an SM57 and a 414. I never liked the guitar sound on the records he recorded, not to mention that he really didn't care about the mics, just make sure that they capture the guitar signal and he'll fix it in the mix.Anyhow, I can see how one would put two microphone in this configuration when close micing a cabinet. That way, both mics are pointing at the center of the speaker. Usually when micing one speaker(whether it's a single speaker cab or multiple speakers cab) with two mics facing it, one of them will be off axis. I don't know how much difference it makes, especially if it's a loud amp, I never stick my ear in front of the speaker, but I can guess it does make some difference with quiet amps.To the original poster, perhaps try making the port? If indeed it's a cabinet with a larger port, then maybe try micing the port with a large diaphragm dynamic?

If it's anything like O'Connor's other books, it's expensive in a way that suggests he's actually interested in being compensated for his time and effort in writing stuff up. I would have been quite happy with a link to a pamphlet for sale. Based only on descriptions and titles, none of the publications or other text on that site looked like it had anything to do with "detuned cabs."

I spent a while clicking around that site and didnt see anything about detuned cabs or even much about cabs at all.

The booklet may well not be available online. If it's anything like O'Connor's other books, it's expensive in a way that suggests he's actually interested in being compensated for his time and effort in writing stuff up. The two books of his that I have were fairly expensive. They're also worth every penny. I look at them like textbooks for college, only they're worth a hell of a lot more cause they're useful in real life applications. As far as micing detuned cabs, I would try microphones and move them around until the recorded sound sounded good.
