Forgot to refer to that in my post. What was Steve's studio's name back then?Steve, if you're reading that, can you please tell us why you put a blanket on Mac Mcneilly's bassdrum?

Was it a cocksniffing type of place back then too?It seems like Steve recorded a lot of bands there.

ah, Chicago Recording Company is another studio in Chicago. They have a website that I will not link to here, for obvious reasons. I believe that it is a super fancy multi room "coke sniiffing" type of place. Suffice to say that their website does not have a free-for-all forum. Steve's house was, I believe, referred to as "Steve's House".

I recorded at CRC once in the nineties. Guess they hid all the coke before we showed up. We made do with sandwiches. The live-room in the studio we recorded in was large enough for a grade-school floor hockey scrimmage and sounded pretty nice. Hence the cavernous drum sounds on records like Goat I guess. The live rooms at EA are nicer though I think. My memory of CRC isn't too sharp. There was some complaint about the condition of the tape machine versus the one at the house and I thought that was kind of surprising for a "fancy pants" studio downtown.Kitty Empire was the ostensible name for Steve's House but, as mentioned above, folks usually just said "Steve's House" or "at Albini's". I like "Kitty Empire" best I but I think the sitcom will probably be called "Albini's".Or the restaurant.

The blanket was to keep cymbal spill to a reasonable level in the bass drum mic. Mac only used a batter head on his bass drum, so it would have been wide open otherwise. Also, the studio in my house didn't have a name, but people usually came up with something.

Hey steve, do you happen to have any old pictures of the home studio from back in the day? I always see things written about it but I'm curious to see how you made use of what you had to work with.
