Minimizing snare drum ringing without muffling

Sometimes I think drummers get a little weird about ringing. Drums ring. They are drums just their nature. You could use the Ringo/funk tuning were you tune the drum then loosen one lug a full turn. Usually it's on the bottom head, actually always on the bottom. I've never had this sound right but supposedly Ringo did. Also you could through some cotton balls inside the drum. The moon gel stuff is kinda silly duck tape does the same thing and thousands of drummers have used it. The comment about backing the drum mics off some is really good advice. The only time I wouldn't do this is drummers who play very lightly or drummers that play their hats loudly. Also the ringing tends to just make things sound more realistic and gets lost with the addition of other instruments. But again this is just what I think.as
