I don't know about the rest of you, but when I use a Y-splitter there is a definite loss in output to each amp (test: gtr plugged into Y, which feeds each amp, one of which is turned down to zero. When I unplug the feed to the zero amp, the on amp gets louder.)

from what i've found online, the morley aby is passive and transformerless. damn near entirely componentless. the battery only serves to power the LED's. so yeah, maybe it's dropping the level and i'm just not noticing it? try it before you buy it i guess.

Try the Little Labs PCI Distro box.

using the regular Morley A B Y box will cut your volume and your gain. I've used the Whirlwind Selector before during recording and it sounded great. It's active, so it doesn't degrade your signal.

If you really want to spend some cash, the TONEBONE ab box has some really cool features.

this is a little off topic, but a couple of you touched on it so here goes...

this is about amp design really - are amps designed to run that hot? i mean, volume-wise. can you rely on the amp not exploding or tearing a cone or otherwise damaging the speaker playing that loud consistently? if i play in a club 3 nights a week, or record or whatever, and you've always got that amp up to 9 or so, can you play confidently knowing you will not damage the speaker? are amps designed to be run full tilt?

cuz i always think of car stereos. they make that volume knob go pretty far, but you can't take it past half way or else you'll fry them speakers. i was just wondering about guitars.

thanks

if your cab is rated higher than your amp, it should be fine. the tubes are taking the stress and those are disposable. i'm sure there's some incremental damage to the output transformer, but i'm not sure how much more than running the amp at "safer" levels. i've run my orange at full volume for 6-8 hours a week for the past 10 years and have had no adverse effects other than dull tubes every now and then.

I thought the Y-cable wouldn't work so well, but Steve actually commented in a thread a week or two ago about his rig. he said that the rig at www.guitargeek.com was pretty accurate, but that he used a Y-splitter and not a splitter box.

edit:

this is the thread
