I went in on one because some of the drummers who've played on challenge songs are not great drum tuners. It sounds like it works alright to me.

I do it all by ear, and though my ears are well-suited enough with other instruments, I don't think they are fine tuned enough or specifically tailored to the tonalities of a drum. Want.

Drum tuning is subjective, and the mechanics of it is a process that anyone undertaking the study and practice of drumming will determine. Coming to that realization is a no-brainer. It's just something that one learns, just like a budding guitar player will learn how to correctly string and tune their instrument. I just don't get the whole they're good but you gotta learn how to tune your own drum mantra. Of course you do, it goes without saying.

As noted, drumheads and bearing edges are not perfect so equal tension isn't always in tune, but it is usually pretty close. As such, these things are dead useful for getting you in the right area fast, a few quick adjustments by ear and you're ready to go. Not crap, but you still need to know how to tune a drum.
