Yeah, sure, he is his own biggest fan. So what? He is a great bass player...huge! Listen what he is doing on "Something". Damn! So melodic... so tasteful... such important parts for the songs. And as far as solo stuff, his first record 'McCartney' is up there with 'All Things Must Pass' as one of the best post-Beatles' records.

Yes, he is a doink a lot of the time. The interview on TV a year or so ago by his daughter was painful to watch. But still, the man laid it down. Sure, he has had some bad moments in his career... I still say it is way out weighed by his great stuff.

He also brought out the best in Lennon, no question.

Not crap where it counts.

Lobster Magnet wrote:The only good thing I have to say about Paul is that he introduced the rest of the Beatles to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, which would greatly influence them in the ways they recorded and so on.

How did Stockhausen really influence The Beatles? Because they ended up putting a piccolo trumpet on parts of "Penny Lane"? Because of the nonsense that is "Revolution #9"?

No offense, but I've heard this statement many times, but I don't hear it. How did Stockhausen really influence The Beatles?

I don't buy this Stockhausen/Beatles argument.

I need some evidence.

Redline wrote:"For No One" (from "Revolver")

How the fuck did I forget this song?

What a great song!

boy, close one

not crap for:

i'm looking thru you
for no one
helter skelter
let me roll it (his great, great answer song to 'how do you sleep')
jet

who wrote 'everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey?' fuck, that's a good song. heard it on the radio the other day.

i pretty much detest wings besides 'jet,' though. a lot of his music is not good at all. and most of what he did that was great was in some way a reaction to lennon, a greater artist and a bigger asshole. but you know, being in the beatles and shit--i'm not the biggest beatles fan, but i can't call him crap.

I'll take advantage of this thread's ambiguity and say not crap

Paul solo? Paul Beatles? Paul in general?

I don't know the solo stuff well enough. He's had a few good solo tracks spread out over the years: 'Junk' (more Beatles era) 'Maybe I'm Amazed' 'Band on the Run' 'Hope of Deliverance'

I'm going to give him a CRAP just for doing that sub-mongoloid, drooling idiot Christmas song "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime" or whatever the fuck it's called.

It really takes some talent to create a work that fills me with such profound seasonal loathing....or not!

He's done work that's on par with "A Simple Plan" and "Good Charlotte" for it's infantile idiocy. But, he also posesses the arrogance to think he could write a symphony.

No surprises on your vote. However:

In what way is this more "arrogant" than thinking he could write a pop song, or concept album?

I suppose you have a point.

He wrote his symphony by playing out parts on a keyboard, recorded to midi tracks on some software, whereupon the software and/or his "assistants" did the job of scoring, transposing parts, working out "problems" since he knew nothing of instruments ranges/capabilities. Basically he wrote a symphony because he's the great Paul Macartney and "why not".

overall paul mccartney can maybe be a bit of poppy, kitschy douche, but in terms of skill and accomplishment, he's definitely NOT CRAP.
