They're useful sometimes simply because you cant convery tone too easily over the internet. For example mock anger can often be taken as real anger without a silly angry smilie.

But the smilies on this site do suck.

they are CRAP, always were, always will be but we have to keep them here, I suggest, so that we can immediatly know that X or Y using them is an idiot w/o even having to read their rants

Cutesy and annoying. I never use them. Ever.

Every once is a while I see a clever variant or where they come in handy for communication. But that is the rare exception. Fuck you round yellow head!

the ones in the electrical forum. CRAP.
the ones in other boards (like invision) are much better. i like them. so NOT CRAP for emoticons in general, when they are well drawn, they can be very effective and give some good laughs.

i even made one. the "pissed off" emoticon. it´s one of my proudest achievements in life. it's perfect and awesome. will post it at night in this thread.

There are EXTREMELY rare occasions (like when you're joking around with someone who maybe doesn't know your sense of humor well) when you need them to make your intention clear.

But 99.99% of the time, completely unnecessary and prone to abuse.*

*exception made for a private board for a small group of friends. We have some custom ones that we use excessively as a convenient shorthand. My favorite one is a big terrified smiley face, the code for which is simply ::holyfuck::
