I shy away from their politics. Ever see that documentary? They're so caught up in the things they stand for they have forgotten how to laugh and have fun. They seem like a pathetic bunch. But they come together and make some of the best music ever captured on tape. Now that is a body of work. One of the greatest bands of the last 25 years. I'll take my hat off to them any day.

This is a statement that could only be made in ignorance. Fugazi are a funny, friendly, outgoing and non-judgemental bunch. In my best moments, I am about 5 percent as charitable as they are, and 2 percent as entertaining to be around.
Show me a more genuine, fun-loving group of friends and you can have my hat.

You're right Steve. My statement was made in ignorance. I do not know them from Adam. I suppose my statement was an awkwardly assembled, long-winded attempt at saying "Shut up and Play".
I have nothing but respect for the DIY approach to music AND life. But if you are in a band, do what a band does. Play music. The music is really the only thing that matters when you take a stage and the only thing that remains when you are long gone.
I didn't really make a point there, did I?

I think bands are remembered not only for their music, but for the way they conduct themselves and what they stood for, whether it's overt or not. I think Fugazi will be a band that is obviously remembered for making great music, but they'll also be remembered for their politics, ideals, work ethic, and snipets of things they said between songs... all of that is what makes the collective personality of a band.
It sounds like Fugazi's outspoken political leanings and ideals annoy you a little bit. If so, that is understandable, but I also think those ideals are the fuel for their music.

I once loaned a friend Steady Diet of Nothing, and he complained that he had to think too hard to understand the music. How many bands have created such complex, deep music that it has derived responses like that?

Eesh, make sure he never gets something crazy by John Zorn or Peter Brotzmann or something. Then his head might explode.
