Mayfair wrote:Quick Codeine story...
They were to be on the Simple Machines 'Working Holiday' 7" series as the flip side to Liz Phair when she was still 'Girly Sounds'. Liz somehow let time get away from her or didn't get to record or something and the old band I was in was put on the flip side in her place. I soon after saw Codeine play in Chicago and met and chatted with those guys (note: Doug was not in the band anymore) and as soon as I mentioned who I was and what band I played with, they totally gave me the cold shoulder. I remember reading an interview with them soon after that that where they go on about how they HATED our track and were really bummed out to be backed with us.
Anyway, it was a cute story I had to share.
shit, mayfair. this saddens me.
for the coctails track is great, the codeine track is horrifying. y'all's is the best of those seven-inchers i've been able to find (not that you asked). i even rank it ahead of the glorious grifters/crain affair.
codeine, incidentally, are beyond 'not crap.' i still reject dozens of contemporary bands out of hand as codeine copyists. they are lords.

A long time ago I made a joke.
I said Codeine was a tape loop of a hammer being dropped into a piano every 30 seconds.
Or something like that. That was my joke.

it's getting to be codeine season. i can't listen to them in the summer, but they fit in really well with the stark, frigid winters we get up here. they are my favorite winter band and are perhaps on my top ten list of all time favorites. not crap.

whoa! hang on a minute, no offence to Mayfair, but "Roll Away The Stone" by the almighty Eggs is actually the best Working Holiday 7"
or is this one of those personal opinion things people keep telling me about?

No offence to me but I am partial to the Lungfish/Tinklers 7".

A very special band for me.
The "White Birch" is a fantastic record.
I wish they would make another record.
So Steve, fan or no?

there are very few bands i can cite as being definitively "inspirational" to my own music.
one of them is codeine.

Me too.
I've been working on a cover of "Pickup Song" which, by the way, is one of the best post-breakup songs ever written.
I also think of Codeine as "winter music", much like Nick Drake.
