Geoff Emerick used a speaker as a microphone to get that UNBELIEVABLE throbbing bass sound on the Beatles' "Paperback Writer." Not sure what kind, though. He was called into the office and reprimanded for "abuse of equipment" for matching the impedance incorrectly!
