I imagine like 75% of that is just them being awesome players, especially with dynamics, but the amps also had a quality where they could dig in and it didn't get harsh or have that icepick-y quality some twins have. Is that kinda the thing you're going for? Twin reverbs are weird because some do the Come/Rowland S Howard/post punk thing real well, but others are like headroom monsters with those EV speakers.Kev11 mentioned what he(or she?) was trying to ballpark here -Kev11 wrote:The twin definitely has potential for the sound I'm after- Rock Punk/Psychedelic Rock/Cramps/Gun Club/Black Angels etc. I was just expecting it to sound less muddy and take pedals better. I was thinking that the amp might not sound great since it was all stock and that maybe this was a known issue where modifications could really helpAssuming that it isn't something like tubes that have seen better days, one easy thing that sticks out in my mind is swapping out preamp tubes. While there aren't any "Silver Bullet" swaps without actually hearing the amp in question, trying out a 5751 preamp tube seems like it might be worth a try. This video has a "Before And After" withe a 5751 tube and a speaker swap. While it's not a jarring difference, it will give you a bit of an idea what you might get.

Hi! I picked up a 65 Twin Reverb reissue in the past year and while I could see how it could approach 'harsh' territory, 'muddy' sounds shouldn't be coming from this amp. Is this something you experience only when using pedals or going straight into the amp? Did you pick this up new or used? You could try swapping some newer/nicer preamp tubes into V1 and V2 (depending on what channel you use) to see if that makes any difference. If you're primarily using channel 2, you could try that old trick of pulling the V1 tube to get an earlier breakup on channel 2. I've been very happy with mine, I would describe the sound as bell-like, chiming, loud as fuck. I did encounter some fucked up ones, though, which led me to shelling out a little extra cash for a 'like-new' one.

Thought it was inner tubes or outer tubes? I let a friend borrow my Music Man 130 and he was like it doesn't sound too great, then later I discovered I'd yanked the two left 6L6s out and left in the two on the right. Oops.

Big John wrote:I think any twin by definition should not sound muddy and def should take boxes well.Yeah, something is wrong with the amp or speaker.Don't pull any power tubes. Pulling a couple power tubes is going to make it muddier and harsher, that's the point.

Can you plug it into other speakers? Do any of the power tubes look weird?
