But I could be wrong.Seriously.Also, I have run a Super Reverb with only one power tube on occasion, at first by accident (tube fell out of loose socket as we were loading in), but afterwards because I was a young dummy with no experience. It sounded pretty awesome and saggy every time I did it, never with any harm to the amp. I dont know if the distortion was asymmetrical (I was also using an old Dist + at the same time). I dont think it sounded particularly like In Utero though. More like Neil Young. No damage to my amp could have just been dumb luck of course.

Looks like every web forum has turned into a competition of not answering questions but judging them and figuring the worst scenario that would have lead the OP to ask for it.Or maybe it's always been the case and i'm just old and fed up with it ?anyway, thanks to those who actually answered the question. I've found some plugins who actually do asymmetrical distortion, it's quite a subtle effect but i like it. I guess pushing the amp to oblivion kind of turns it into some fuzz territory. That's what i'm interested it, something in between distortion and fuzz. also found some distortion pedals with asymmetrical distortion on youtube, some good, some bad.

At practice one night, one of the power tubes in my bandmate's Verellen Coop (blackface Fender Bassman-esque circuit) cracked and it ran on one tube for the remainder of practice before we realized. It was quieter but didn't sound all that different, at least in a full band context.I think OP is better off trying some sort of combo of DS1/Rat/Distortion+ into a clean-ish amp.

Kurt liked the DS-1; in my experience those pedals suck shit, but the Keely modded ones are supposed to be decent.I think he actually used the DS-2. Most of the pics I've seen there's a 4-knob Boss distortion pedal on the floor. The Keeley modded DS-1 rules. I wish I still had mine. But it doesn't really sound anything like a DS-1 anymore. The mod gives you a huge volume boost and there's a lot more (and thicker) distortion on tap. An un-modded DS-1 won't even get you unity gain (in most setups) with the volume maxed.

You'll find more legitimate help here from serious musicians and builders, without armchair attitude or quasi-knowledge bullshit. I tried to answer your question, but without context it sounded like you might have been someone new getting into guitar sounds for the first time; someone who may benefit from some different advice
