Portishead for the S/T and Third. The first album never did much for me.

The ladies prefer Portishead, and all that entails. Trip-Hop is not my bag otherwise, but that's reason enough to own a Portishead record.

Massive Attack on the strength of Blue Lines and to lesser extent Protection; Portishead-like "Mezzanine" and the Tricky discography-has a 90s stench so thick I find it perfectly comparable with post-grunge, Blink 182 and Nu-metal. I remember liking "Dummy" for a few weeks back in 94 (95?) but I've found them unbearable ever since...

Both dated horribly, IMO. Ditto Tricky. Music for a future that never happened.
I feel bad for Portishead as that first record became the blueprint for a lot of garbage and its impact has lessened substantially as a result. But that formula is the best thing this whole scene came up with. The best pure idea. You could always see the working around the edges w/ Massive in terms of influences / vibe. A bit hipster magpie. I guess Massive covered more territory overall and were (generally) sonically very bold.
MA. Just.
