Re: Guilty pleasures: bands you aren't supposed to like but like anyway

I think the team of Ginger/Twiggy (probably the producers too) made an incredible use of space and dynamics on that album. It's the only Manson really worth a listen, the American Family stuff hasn't aged well and everything after Antichrist is horrible and overwrought. But for mersh metal, Antichrist Superstar has a lot to chew on.

I wish Rob Zombie had an album full of "Dragula"s or "Red Red Kroovy"s but alas.

Christ, where to begin?

OK, I'll take Haircut 100 for starters. There's a shot of nostalgia in there, I'll admit, but even now, the Pelican West LP is a way better record than it has any right to be. At the time, I remember my young self reading about them in Look-in magazine and being mightily taken with the whole nipple-high-guitars-and-birdshit-highlights look. In retrospect, forty years on, they were clearly shooting for an Orange Juice vibe and just happened upon some chart success along the way. Them's the breaks!

I also have tickets to go see Scritti Politti in September ('Rona permitting), which I bought specifically because they'll be doing Cupid & Psyche '85 in its entirety. No post punk kudos for me, thank you...that shit's all about the Fairlight.
"What am I gonna do with 40 subscriptions to Vibe?"

I talk disjointed music-related guff over here. You're welcome.

My BIG one is not a band but I have to mention it anyway: the TV series 24. Remember that one? That open celebration of authoritarian government released to accompany the terrorist scare. One of the most immoral things ever put on television. But also one with quite a lot of suspense and several interesting storylines (even if none of them are ever really developed enough). Also I'm kind of horrifiedly amused at its sheer uncompromisingness.

None of that can change that it's thoroughly disgusting. But of course I on some level enjoy that kind of disgust as well. But if someone seriously liked the show, and thought Jack Bauer was "cool" and so on (which I remember quite a number of people in my vicinity doing when the show first made the rounds) I don't think I would ever want to talk to them again.

I hate to admit it, but the song Stop! by Jane's Addiction is fun as hell. Normally Jane's Addiction greatly annoys me. The singer is annoying. Been Caught Stealing is one of my least favourite songs. They inspire a similar kind of nausea in me that Red Hot Chili Peppers do.

Even the singing works in this song. I think I like it also because it reminds me of a song by Melt Banana. And one by Refused, probably.
