For my money, there are no snare drum with more dynamic range than a wooden Gretsch snare. Not always useful for rock stuff, but if you need to go from a whisper to "louder than a guillotine," here's your drum:

I prefer guitar solos to drum solos, but sometimes if drum solos are (like DaveA mentioned) well placed and played well, then they are capable of sounding good in my opinion.

You ain't kidding. He's such an incredibly musical drummer — I don't know how else to put it, but that's the only adjective that comes to mind. Killer tuning, too.
