Double Negative had better songs, but I only know that because I saw them live (both right before and right after the album came out.) As much as I dug those shows, when I hear that album, it's really hard for me to hear what made those tunes so great.

With this new one...I think that, as an album, it's way stronger. It's waaaay more into the whole fucking "ope, song is just choppy tremolo bits," which I'm into.

I also can't remember a goddamn song off of it. Maybe that's not a bad thing?

For me, its been great! It was just enough choppedness and screwedness to sound interesting and still sound like them…instead of sounding like some dude fucking around w/Ableton.

That's the key to me. If the whole band decides to run a section of their song through those Sunn o))) boxes then fine: they can probably shape it into something that makes sense. But since some producer I'd never otherwise heard of does it with a bit reducer plugin then it seems random and superfluous.

None of their first six or seven records are diminished by their direction on the last couple of them. I was not a huge fan of Double Negative, but I do really like HEY WHAT.

I just had a look at their discography, and holy shit, Drums and Guns came out 14 years ago. Dang. Tell you what, though, Sparhawk sounds way pissed off on that record.
